About

DAAM is an award-winning professional design firm founded on principles of collaboration and cross-disciplinary practice at the intersection of Design, Architecture, Art and Making. Our mission is to advance creative thinking-and-doing in the built environment through a hands-on approach to building physical places and things. Led by Elyse Agnello, AIA & Alex Shelly, AIA, our small – but mighty (!) – team is committed to carefully listening, actively researching, and passionately working to realize new ideas of all kinds.

Our attitude towards building our practice is to specialize in not specializing; we lean into our collective capacity as dynamic thinkers, nimble designers, and dedicated collaborators. We seek out and create projects where problems are celebrated and craftsmanship is embraced. Our clients to date have ranged from brick-and-mortar startups with innovative business concepts to homeowners and developers with atypical aspirations for their residential spaces. We approach each DAAM Project with a “challenge accept” mindset and genuine excitement to create a design that is transformative – one that valorizes a neighborhood, breathes new life into an abandoned structure, creates a new way of being together, or simply inspires a passerby.

DAAM was founded in Chicago in 2016 by Elyse Agnello. Soon thereafter she was joined by Alex Shelly, and since then, the two have led the firm in designing and building over a dozen projects. DAAM is a Business Enterprise Program (BEP) certified Women-Owned Business Enterprise (WBE) recognized by both the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois. We are pre-qualified to provide design services for the Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB) and the City of Chicago’s INVEST South/West initiative.
